Hawkins Landscape Supply

Just had 3 yards of 50/50 compost and 1 yard of topsoil delivered. great looking product and the delivery guy was very helpful in putting the soil in the right place. Marina is the office manager and she was so helpful and amazing. My delivery was later in the week, but she was able to squeeze my delivery in at an earlier date.

Richmond has a new landscaping company, Hawkins Landscape. They are aggressively making their mark. I just ordered 6 yards of screened top soil. They are competitively priced and don’t charge a delivery fee. They are obviously in high demand. So much so Hawkins delivered my top soil on Sunday morning. Good stuff. Very happy with my product.

I ultimately received 7 cubic yards of colorized mulch. The product looks OK, but the hassle and wasted time getting it delivered was huge. This company does not have enough people to answer their phone or respond to emails. YOU, as the customer, will end up paying the price for that if you do business with them. I started out by placing an order for topsoil I needed to establish a new lawn area. I called before leaving on a week-long trip to make sure I was leaving enough lead time. At that time, I was told that delivery within a day or two was not a problem. Upon my return I placed the order online, giving several days advance notice and asking them in the comments to phone or email if there was a problem with the requested date. When the delivery wasn't made I made multiple calls, and I was placed on hold for extended periods. When I finally got through, I had no reasonable assurance of when delivery could be made, so I canceled the order for topsoil and was promised that the price that I had prepaid with my order would be refunded. Another company delivered the topsoil within about a day with no problem. About ten days later I noticed that I had no credit from Hawkins for the refund on my bank statement. I was trying to be nice, so to make this as easy as possible, I suggested that I could order some mulch that I needed and use the refund as a credit on that. I was promised that I would receive an email that day with an invoice to pay for the difference. That never arrived. Multiple calls to straighten out THEIR confusion. Almost every time placed on hold, sometimes for half an hour. They blamed the fact that this is their busy season, but even so, they seem horribly disorganized, and I ended up paying the price for that. No concept of keeping commitments that they made to me as a customer. They did manage to deliver the mulch today on the date promised, but late in the afternoon when it was supposed to be in the morning. No call from the driver to alert me when he was on his way as promised.

I ordered half a cord or seasoned firewood. It showed up wetter than a bathtub. I covered it with a tarp, and tried to burn it. It hisses like a tea kettle and won't burn. I had taken a good stack inside the first day it was delivered. When I called Hawkins about the wet wood, they were confrontational, but they said they would come look at the wood. They never showed up. I even sent them photos and videos of the wood trying to burn. The only way I can get it to burn is by getting a hot enough fire using wood from Harris Teeter, and putting Hawkins wood on, one log at a time. Don't recommend this company. They sell wet wood, and have horrible customer service. Will not be using them again.

I have used Hawkins or 2 years now and they are my favorite if you want top notch firewood (on a budget) and dont mind stacking it yourself. They provide easy online ordering with affordable pricing. I order 1/2 a cord for $175.00 which usually last me through the winter. They have great customer service. Their A team will call to verify delivery date and special instructions if any prior to delivery. The heavier oak wood provides slow-burning heat that I love in the winter. The smaller pieces of wood is great for starting the fire. Overall, I recommend this place for its quality of mixed wood, customer service, and price.
